What’s the biggest misconception about leadership in accounting today, and how do you see yourself challenging that?
One of the biggest misconceptions about leadership in accounting today is that it revolves solely around technical expertise and number-crunching. In reality, effective leadership in this field requires a blend of strong people management skills and strategic thinking. As a working mom, I have firsthand experience with the importance of flexibility and work-life balance—elements that were not always prioritized in the past. By advocating for and implementing flexible work arrangements, I challenge the outdated notion that leadership must conform to rigid, traditional structures. This approach not only supports a more inclusive and diverse workplace but also enhances productivity and job satisfaction. My leadership style emphasizes empathy, adaptability, and a holistic view of success, ensuring that both professional and personal needs are met.
When you look back at the moment you decided to pursue leadership, was there a particular experience or person who shaped that choice?
As someone who thrives on working with others and building relationships, leadership has come naturally to me. This ability to connect with people has been a cornerstone of my leadership journey. As a working mom with three young boys, my decision was also deeply personal. I wanted to show my boys that women can be strong, independent, and successful leaders. Balancing a demanding career with motherhood has its challenges, but it has also been incredibly rewarding. I strive to be a role model for my boys and hope they will be allies to women who appreciate the importance of equality and respect and carry these values forward into their own careers and lives.
AG Accelerate is ultimately about accelerating your vision, impact, and success—what’s one personal challenge or breakthrough that AG Accelerate has helped you with so far?
AG Accelerate has positively impacted my professional journey. Before joining, I felt compelled to be involved in every aspect of my firm’s operations to prove my worth, which often left me spread too thin. The personalized development plan prepared for me throughout AG Accelerate has enabled me to focus on my strengths and set clear boundaries, allowing me to decline tasks that do not align with my vision. This shift has enhanced my effectiveness as a leader and allowed me to contribute more meaningfully to my firm’s success. Additionally, I have learned that I do not need to prove myself by taking on every task. Instead, I can trust in my abilities and concentrate on what I do best, which has been incredibly empowering.
In a world that’s rapidly automating, what human quality do you believe is essential for the future of leadership, and how do you nurture that in yourself?
In an increasingly automated world, empathy stands out as an essential quality for the future of leadership. While technology can handle many tasks, it cannot replicate the human ability to understand and connect with others on an emotional level. Empathy allows leaders to build strong, trusting relationships, foster collaboration, and create a supportive work environment.
As a mom, nurturing empathy comes naturally to me. Parenting requires a deep understanding of each child’s unique needs and emotions, which translates well into my professional life. I make a conscious effort to actively listen to both my team members and clients, understand their perspectives, and show genuine concern for their well-being. By continually working on my ability to empathize, I aim to lead with compassion and create a positive impact within my organization.
What advice would you give to others considering joining AG Accelerate?
If you’re considering joining AG Accelerate, my advice is to fully embrace the opportunity. The program offers tailored resources and support to help you focus on your strengths and make a significant impact. Be prepared to step out of your comfort zone, engage and work directly with other leaders from across the continent, seek feedback, and learn from others. The connections and insights you gain will be invaluable.
